The carved work on many of these boxes represents the ancient Chinese art form called coromandel. It is the carving of clay over wood, handpainted with an oil base paint, and using several layers of lacquer as a finish to protect the artwork. You'll surely recognize where the inspiration came from for much of the artwork.
